The same economists who spent decades lecturing us that any US response to China's obvious unfair trade practices would only hurt American citizens... are now declaring that other countries must respond to US tariffs to protect thier citizens.

Maybe they weren't free traders after all. Maybe they were just un-American.

Janet Yellen? omg part of the banker's cartel. Davos neo con globalist who has never had a real job. Academic and government only.

A large segment of the population still thinks globalization to be great stuff, and that tariffs are the cause of increased prices,,,,, in a service economy. I'd like to see a schematic of where money is spent by a typical Jane or John Doe in the middle three quintiles. Effective misinformation I'd call it.

This past week I noticed the dental chain I go to had larded on a bunch of extra very pricey images, therapeutic time release drug injections, etc. for a root canal. I called around for Endodontic docs. Surprisingly I was able to get an appointment at all of them within a couple of days.

People are cutting back on dental work. Who knew, dentistry as a leading economic indicator. We all need to go to the dentist, but root canals and crowns get pushed off until later. Saved 75% by the way.

It's hard to take the position of other countries trying to establish too close relationships with China, when juxtaposed against Trumps behaviors during the recent visit by Xi. Do as I say, not as I do, I guess!

The problem with the administratuon’s behavior is they are not trustworthy. If I were a mafia boss and the Trump administration were the biggest of us, and they went to war with an Iranian gang that's been a real hassle, I wouldn’t work with them if I could help it because they’re thankless and have no gratitude and break their world depending on what they see on social media. You can’t do good business with these people and a lot of this extra legal action is going to end in November, so there’s no point in backing it. The piece also neglects that the administration is hurting existing manufacturing- ie inputs from Canada in the auto business that get hit crossing the border each way. You can back these guys all you want, but just look at the Iran war. It is illegal, first, but second, it’s a failure. It doesn't matter what they say, they’ve hosed their relationships with the Middle East, failed to take out the government and destroyed the diesel market and there’s no credible plan to fix it. The failure to ramp up interceptors of all kinds is criminal malpractice. Also, Canada is going to dump the F35 eventually and leave the American defense stack and that, along with Europe leaving, is going to hurt us “bigly” in the future, but sure, someone might build a syringe plant, so any criticism of the current group of criminals is just misguided. This won’t be a good look for you in the long run.

You mention the fees on H1B visas. But a court just struck those down.

Ya gotta love Oren’s weekly imitation of the Biden Administration as he fluffs for Don. Joepa too loved to cite cherry-picked stats to lecture the rubes on how they just didn’t understand, the economy wasn’t what they thought, it was rockin. Of course this is true for elites in the Epstein Class, but for working stiffs? Not so much. So, consumer confidence and voter approval of DonOrenomics continue to decline, and have even sunk below Joepa’s dreadful numbers.

Perhaps this is why the closing campaign message from the “new” right/MAGA isn’t remotely related to the economy or their Middle East war. Instead, it’s all about trans kids in faraway places, oh so scary rants about brown people coming to get us, and how Dumocrats are socialists/marxists/communists/whatever.

The “new” right has had over a decade of dominating American politics. They ARE the establishment. Seems to me the movement has gone stale. Isn’t it time for a new “new” right? This one has become pretty doggone boring.

Karl. The article is primarily about bringing manufacturing back to the United States. Try reading before commenting 🇺🇸

Hey Ron, I read the piece, but I'm sorry I missed the point. Help me out. Which of my irrelevant points do you disagree with?

Ron Bengtson's avatar

Karl, if that is your real name, you are obviously a troll. You have no posts and your only replies are to commonplace posts. Maybe you use a different name for replying to other publications. Your wit is caustic and funny. But not helpful. You have a grievance and you are expressing it by trolling this publication. For some reason you have a problem with Oren Cass. I enjoy Oren’s analysis and wit. He is funny too. But, unlike you, his thoughts are helpful. Have you considered writing a real post to express your views?

Ron, apparently you're uncomfortable expressing an opinion on the issues I raise. That's why I raise them. Because too many people who know better turn away. They feel it’s more “helpful” to stay silent.

If I've not been clear with my incessant trolling, I'll troll again. I think the establishment elites in my former party know the truth about the threat Don poses. Many, from JD and Little Marco to dozens of others, once dared to state it. JD did so in terms far harsher than I ever have on these pages (America’s Hitler, cultural heroin, etc).

But, these establishment elites now remain silent. They acquiesce, they cower, they rationalize, they enable. They do so because they place tribal loyalty and their personal interests ahead of our national interest. JD is cut from the same cloth as Mitch McConnell. Read Mitch's floor speech post-January 6th, then ponder his vote to acquit. If he actually believed what he said in his speech, there is no way he could cast that vote. Heck, he's even capitulated while Don lobs disgusting racial slurs at his wife, a woman Don appointed to his cabinet. A woman who resigned in the aftermath of Don’s insurrection. And yet, like JD, Mitch deems the public humiliation worth it as long as it benefits him. This isn't "helpful".

But it’s not just political elites who have agency and responsibility. Business elites, faith community elites, think tank elites etc. also have agency. And responsibility. AC knows the truth. They understand both what rule of law means for a successful economy, and also what it means more broadly. Yet they persist in their mission to normalize Don, to retroactively concoct an intellectual fig leaf to justify his corrupt enterprise. Why? Access. Fundraising. Personal interest. I’m sorry Ron, I just can’t play along. I’m just a random internet troll, but I have a voice, and I’m gonna use it. Even if it’s “not helpful”. Establishment elites need to justify the choices they’re making, not hide behind esoteric policy debates. Think of the irony, my former party once made such an issue over “character”. Not the “new” right, they’re all in with the corruption as long as they make a buck and get invited to the cool kid parties.

I agree with some of the policy ideas AC advances. But this isn’t about policy. Don will happily reside on any side of any issue. As for me, I'd vote for a far left or far right candidate, hell, I'd vote for a canned ham, as long as the person was a normal human being willing to fulfill his oath and respect the rule of law. We can fix bad policy. Repairing the institutional damage Don is inflicting will be far harder.

Truth trumps tribe. I'm gonna keep telling the truth, the same truth JD once uttered.

Anyone still getting COVID boosters at this point is not someone I would take advice from.

Ben B's avatar

Maybe you can ask Herman Cain for advice.

Karl's avatar

Natural selection is real. Hence the disparate Covid death rates between red and blue jurisdictions. Seems fitting, given the disparity in education levels between the two.

Only in America would a miracle drug be eschewed by so many merely upon instructions from an aging, incoherent politician who was availing himself of said drug. Karma is a beautiful thing.

Measles anyone?

My thoughts EXACTLY!
